The Joys of Working Out–at Home!

My hubby and I bought a home gym system last week, and I love it! I’ve had a gym membership for the past few years, but now that I’m married and living MUCH farther away from the gym, it isn’t exactly convenient. On many weekends when I thought about working out, the thought usually died once I started contemplating the 40 minutes it would take just to drive there and back. Needless to say, I’ve felt a little lethargic on many days, without my usual dose of energy.
But last week, I was browsing some online local classifieds when I found an ad for a gym system with a squat rack, pulley system, Olympic bar, and 300 pounds of weight (which should be more than enough for me for awhile!!). It was less than half the price of what we had been thinking about spending, and less than a year of my membership at the gym.
I will admit that our basement definitely has a less space now, but I think it’s space used well: Now, in the slim hour and a half I have between my internship and night class, I have time to get in a quick workout, pack my supper, AND pick up a few things around the house between sets. On a night when I didn’t have class, I even cooked a nice dinner for my husband in the time I saved driving to and from the gym. So I’d say that our new setup has made both of us very happy!
Lifting weights has done so much for me. It gives me energy on days when I have to spend a lot of time sitting at a desk. It gives me something positivie to think about if I’m having a bad day. And it’s begun to transform my feelings about my body: When I lift, I’m focused on becoming stronger and fitter, and getting the proper nutrition to support a healthy body. I’m more productive in my everyday life because I’m feeling better physically, mentally, and emotionally.
My husband and I also will be able to spend more quality time together now that we’re able to work out together in our home–even though it might be slightly annoying to our families to hear us kiddingly talk in our beefy bodybuilder voices all the time now.
So many benefits, and all for just a little bit of time and money!
